Staying hydrated in a hot climate

Updated 21 October 2026 ยท Based on WHO and NHS guidance

Your body needs water to work well, and in hot weather or when you're active you lose more of it through sweat.

How much to drink

The NHS suggests aiming for 6 to 8 glasses of fluid a day, and more when it's hot or you're exercising. Water is the best choice; milk and unsweetened drinks count too.

Signs to drink more

  • Feeling thirsty.
  • Dark yellow urine.
  • Headache, tiredness or feeling dizzy.

Tips

  • Carry a bottle of water, especially when you exercise.
  • Drink before, during and after workouts.
  • Limit sugary drinks and sweetened juices, which add sugar without filling you up.
  • Eat water-rich foods like watermelon, oranges and cucumber.
