Walking for health

Updated 21 October 2026 ยท Based on WHO and NHS guidance

Walking is free, needs no equipment and is one of the easiest ways to be more active. Brisk walking counts towards your weekly activity.

What "brisk" means

Walk fast enough that your heart beats faster and you breathe a little harder, but you can still hold a conversation. If you can sing comfortably, try picking up the pace.

Ways to walk more

  • Get off the trotro or bus a stop early and walk the rest.
  • Walk to the shops or market instead of driving for short trips.
  • Take a 10-minute walk after meals.
  • Walk with a friend, family member or a walking group: it makes it easier to keep going.

Stay safe in the heat

In hot weather, walk in the cooler parts of the day, wear light clothing and carry water. Log your walks in My Fitbody to see them count towards your week.
