Step-Ups

Video: “Step Up Exercise | Osteoarthritis Physiotherapy” by Cornerstone Physiotherapy on YouTube. Plays in YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode.

How to do it

Stepping up onto a bench or sturdy step strengthens your thighs and glutes. 20 reps is 10 leading with each leg.

  1. Stand facing a stable bench or step that is about knee height or lower.
  2. Place your whole right foot on the step.
  3. Push through your right heel to step up, bringing your left foot to meet it.
  4. Step down with your left foot, then your right. Repeat, then lead with the other leg.

Tips and safety

  • Use a lower step if your knee goes past your toes or your form slips.
  • Make sure the step can't slide or tip.

Move within a comfortable range and stop if you feel pain. If you have an injury or health condition, check with a qualified professional first.
