Video: “Chair sit to stand (Box Squat)” by Banff Sport Medicine Foundation on YouTube. Plays in YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode.
How to do it
A squat with a chair behind you for safety. It builds the leg strength you use every time you get up, and it is the best first step towards a full squat.
- Sit near the front of a sturdy chair with your feet flat and hip-width apart.
- Lean forward slightly and reach your arms out in front.
- Press through your feet to stand up tall, squeezing your glutes.
- Sit back down slowly and with control.
Tips and safety
- Put the chair against a wall so it can't slide.
- Use your hands on your thighs at first if you need to.
- Use a lower seat or a slower descent to make it harder.
Move within a comfortable range and stop if you feel pain. If you have an injury or health condition, check with a qualified professional first.
