Video: “How to do a Dumbbell Lateral Raise” by National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM) on YouTube. Plays in YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode.
How to do it
This isolation exercise strengthens the sides of your shoulders. Light weights work well here.
- Stand tall with a light dumbbell in each hand at your sides, palms facing in and elbows slightly bent.
- Brace your stomach and keep your shoulders down, away from your ears.
- Breathe out and raise your arms out to the sides until your hands reach shoulder height.
- Pause briefly, then breathe in and lower slowly.
Tips and safety
- Lead with your elbows and don't lift higher than your shoulders.
- If you have to swing your body, the weights are too heavy.
Move within a comfortable range and stop if you feel pain. If you have an injury or health condition, check with a qualified professional first.
